Term 4 Week 8

On Tuesday the Juniors had a Discovery Day. Here is a video of the activities we got to explore. Thank you to all the senior students who came to teach us a range of skills. 
On Tuesday we had Tinwald School perform Kapa Haka for us. We loved having them visiting our school. 
 We have been creating Christmas decorations. We wrote stories about our art.

Term 4 Week 7

It was great to see lots of parents join us for our whānau PE afternoon. Room 6 showed them our PMP skills. 
We went down to King street to practice crossing the road safely.
We have got 7 new students visiting Room 6 each Thursday. They will be starting next year.

Term 4 Week 6

We had a great afternoon at Pet Hour last Friday.  We made these pet houses with Mrs McCully. 
We have been trying lots of new things in the afternoons. Here we are creating buildings, making circuits with the Brain boxes and working nicely together on the car mat. 
We love going to Kiwi Can. Today we learnt about feelings and what we should do when we get angry.

Term 4 Week 4

We have had a very busy week. We went on a Junior School trip to the Ashburton Museum and the Art Gallery to learn about changes in Ashburton over the years. We had a great time. 
We have been learning about healthy eating and brushing our teeth. We loved learning how to brush our teeth and practising it at school this week.

Term 4 Week 3

We made some gorgeous pumpkin Halloween artwork. 
We love having Miss Stringer helping us. She has been teaching us alongside Miss Patrick and Ally this week. 
 We had a great time visiting Merle Leask on Wednesday. We met some of the new children who will be starting in Room 6 next year.

Term 4 Week 2

We have been working extremely hard to learn our alphabet names and sounds and to spell our names by ourselves. 
We got a treat for all the great effort we put in on Athletics Day. It was nice to sit in the sun and enjoy our ice creams. 
 We have been learning about directional language. We went up the ladder, across the bridge and then down the slide. We also did some fantastic writing about this.
 On Wednesday we had Room 5 join us. We read stories about Elma the Elephant and created some great artwork. You can see this in Room 6. 
We are great at working on tasks by ourselves while our guided reading groups are being taken.

Term 4 Week 1

We have had a busy start to term 4. 
On Tuesday we had our Cluster Schools Athletics competition. Miss Patrick was very proud of everyone for trying their best. Thank you to all the parents who came to support us all. 
We have been working really hard. We are loving having Mrs Tew to help us out with all the fantastic students we have in Room 6. 
On Thursday and Friday we had a special visitor called Harold the giraffe come to school. He came to teach us about eating healthy, how our bodies work and keeping our teeth clean. 
Mrs Tew came to school on Thursday with some beans for us to plant. We used the compost from our school worm farm to help our beans to grow. We learnt lots of new vocabulary such as 'bean pod', we wrote stories and are going to do some art work next week.

Term 3 Week 8

This week we have been learning about growing plants. We love our New World Little Gardens and are taking great care of them by watering them and putting them in the sunshine. 
 We also went out to our School orchard to look at the fruit trees. We are hoping that they grow some delicious fruit this year. We also wrote about fruits and used the Māori words for apple, banana and orange in our writing. 
We had a great time during Athletics playing fun games. We have been using the parachute to learn to work as a team. 
 On Thursday we had a math session outside. We had to show Miss Patrick how good we were at writing our numbers and names.

Term 3 Week 7

We had a fantastic Whānau Hui consult on Tuesday afternoon. Here is a video showing you what happened. 


Room 6 have been learning about Story Telling. Miss Patrick has been trialling this new learning approach to help support the children to sequence ideas and to increase their oral language levels. This is us on our third practice.

Term 3 Week 6

We have been having the most amazing time at swimming this week. We are all learning lots of new skills and improving everyday. We would like to thank our fantastic Home and School group for paying for the buses for us to get to the pool. 

This week we have been reading books and poems about swimming. On Monday we did some description writing about our swimming togs. 
We found this snake in a tree in a neighbours yard near our school. We went to have a look at it and did some great writing about what we saw and heard on our adventure.

Term 3 Week 5

We loved using the new magnifying glasses Miss Patrick got the Junior School this week. We got to look at flowers for our writing. Our challenge was to add in a Māori word for the colour of our flower. 
Mr Wheeler, Miss Patrick and Roz took us to visit Merle Leask Kindy. We enjoyed spending time with the students who are going to be joining our classroom next term. 
We have had some amazing Whānau Hui group members help make poi with us for our end our term school performance. 
We loved practicing our poems on the pretend stage in Room 6 this week. Well done to Ella, Amika and Steven who were in the schools poetry competition.

Term 3 Week 4

Room 6 is on assembly item this week. We have made a video of all the learning we have been doing this term.

Term 3 Week 3

Thank you to all Whānau who took the time to come to 3 Way Conferences and talk with your child about their learning. 

The following are some links that I mentioned to engage the children in leaning their alphabet. 





This is our gorgeous Reuben Paterson artwork. It is up in the library on display if you want to come and have a look at it. The koru represent different members of our whānau.  

On Wednesday we were learning lots of new words. We got to explore on the playground and learn about going under, over, across, through and up and down objects. Here is some writing we did about our adventure. 

We loved sharing the library with Room 1. We got to try complete some Māori puzzles, read books and share our own stories with them. 

In maths we have been learning skip counting and adding groups of numbers together. We love using the penguins to help us.

Term 3 Week 2

This week we celebrated Cook Island Māori Language Week. The students loved learning about this with Mrs Tew. 
 On Monday we wrote about mandarins. We worked really hard to use the word "karaka" which means orange in Māori in our writing. 
During Discovery we got the chance to do some Cook Island Māori based art work.

Term 3 - Week 1


Talofa lava, Kia orana, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Talofa ni, Kia ora and Hello


A warm welcome back to term 3. Miss Patrick is very excited to be back from visiting the 5 schools overseas.
Our topic focus this term is Nga Taonga o te Iwi - To celebrate Māori culture and its importance to wider New Zealand culture. We have started to learn our colours in Māori, the history of the koru and about kōwhaiwhai patterns. On Tuesday we learnt how to draw koru and loved using our special sketching pencils. Please make sure your whānau return their family tree information asap. 
We have been working hard during reading time to learn all our alphabet letters, high frequency words and to illustrate the stories we have read. 
In maths we have been learning to recognise numbers quickly and to make groups of up to 10 items. We have also been practicing how to write our numbers correctly. 
 Miss Patricks little sister came to help Room 6 paint our family trees and make some biscuits. We loved getting to ice our biscuits with koru patterns and loved eating them even more. 
The Junior School had an amazing time during Discovery this week. The students enjoyed exploring our Māori topic through lots of different activities. A big thank you to Cassie and Roz for supporting the children to make Matariki flax flowers. 

We love sharing our ideas or news in a doughnut style. 
As part of our winter fitness the entire school meets in the hall 3 days a week to learn some Jump Jam. Thank you to our Home and School group for buying us some new songs this year.
